Flags can also make the time of praise more engaging, creating an atmosphere of freedom. Not all flag styles are the same. The four most popular styles are rectangular, swallowtail, half-circle, and heraldic flags.
Rectangular or square flags are the simplest and perhaps the most popular. They can be small enough for an infant to wave, or so large they have to be maneuvered with both hands. A good, useful size is three feet long by two feet wide. In order to make waving the banner easier, it is usually placed on a wooden or plastic dowel rod.
Swallowtails have a signature fluttery and tapered end, similar to the tail of a swallow. These these flags feature vibrant, multicolored designs. Not only are they rather beautiful, they are ideal both for dance pieces and regular church services.
Half-Moons are semicircular cuts of cloth that are generally smaller than square or rectangular flags. They are also known as angel wings, and advanced flag dancers often use bigger ones. These flags flow easily and beautifully, and tend to be used in pairs, one piece in each hand.
Heraldic Flags, as their name suggests, are used to announce specific attributes of God. Such flags are not for everyday use, and are usually given a place of prominence in the main worship area. They are grand and brightly-colored, with Christian symbols and names of God as part of the design.
Custom flags and banners can be ordered online or bought from specific stores, but this can work out to be relatively expensive. Most churches have straining budgets, so it may be wiser for those who want flags to make their own. When selecting flag fabric, think about how the material responds both to light and to being waved. Does it flutter or reflect the light well? If so, it’s an ideal fabric. Organza and silks are among the most widely used fabrics. If a lightweight fabric is not suitable to the flag’s purpose, a heavier fabric, such as taffeta, may be used.
Choosing the right colors can appear difficult, but there is no formula for determining what a particular flag color means. Some colors and meanings have been widely employed, however. Gold flags tend to be symbolic of the glory of God, and white is often used for purity and God’s holiness. Red is used to represent the blood of Jesus, signifying salvation from sin. Purple is the color most frequently associated with majesty, so it is used to show that God is King over all.
With all the colors in the world, any color can be used to represent a specific and significant spiritual truth. Worship banners are just symbols. They have no intrinsic power, and are tools that can serve to add something special to an already wonderful experience.
