*a gutsy person
*gut it out
*have the center
*trust your gut
It seems that these slang phrases even have a solid, scientific basis. Medical research has proven that there's a second brain within the body and it's located within the belly.
This brain is formed from nerve cells lining the alimentary canal . Scientists call it the enteric systema nervosum . It's an in depth and highly complicated structure that really consists of more neurons than are contained within the entire spine.
Dr. Michael Gershon, Professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in ny City, has done extensive research demonstrating that the enteric systema nervosum operates as an independent, second brain within the body.
This belly brain is simply as complex because the one in our heads. The enteric systema nervosum and therefore the lobe of the skull brain are literally formed from an equivalent group of cells within the developing fetus. This brain within the gastrointestinal system knows exactly what nutrients are coming in, what it needs, and the way best to use the fuel.
The nerves within the belly are wise. If asked they're going to tell you exactly what foods are needed, and in what amounts, to make optimum health. even as we trust our bodies to breathe perfectly, we will also trust them to guide our eating.
