The belly is far more intelligent than we've been taught to believe. I‘m sure you‘ve heard the phrase, "Follow your gut." In fact, we've many terms like that in our language:
*a gutsy person
*gut-level feeling
*gut it out
*have the center
*trust your gut
It seems that these slang phrases even have a solid, scientific basis. Medical research has proven that there's a second brain within the body and it's located within the belly.
This brain is formed from nerve cells lining the alimentary canal . Scientists call it the enteric systema nervosum . It's an in depth and highly complicated structure that really consists of more neurons than are contained within the entire spine.
Dr. Michael Gershon, Professor at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in ny City, has done extensive research demonstrating that the enteric systema nervosum operates as an independent, second brain within the body.
This belly brain is simply as complex because the one in our heads. The enteric systema nervosum and therefore the lobe of the skull brain are literally formed from an equivalent group of cells within the developing fetus.
